Injured Player Policy

Since it's likely we will have Ellis, Ginobili and Arenas sitting on the FA market soon (at least they should be), we will handle the return of any seriosuly injured player (out at least a month or 15 games) that has been dropped like this: When they are about to return, we will hold contraction style bidding on that player. Please refer to the contraction process post in the blog for the details on how this bidding works if you havent already.

Tentative Contraction Process

Here is my plan for contraction. We are at 14 teams and I think the league operates best with 11-12 teams. That means we will need to contract 2-3 teams at some point to reach that number. Here is what I'm thinking: We will draft. We will definitely contract at least 2 teams (one at a time), but it will not be scheduled.

I think this could play out two ways:

1. Someone always seems to contract themselves through missing the draft, not participating in discussion, not responding to trade offers, not seeking to make any moves, or just being a general disruption to everyone else in the league. If I feel or there is a general feeling that this is occuring, I will take a vote of the Veteran's Committee on whether to have a contraction. I will then take votes from the Veteran's Committee on who to contract if the committee has voted (at least 5 out of 9 votes) to contract.

2. If we reach December 1st and we are still over 12 teams, the Veteran's Committee will vote on whether to have a contraction and who to contract. I have a feeling a couple of teams will have weeded themselves out by December 1st, but we'll see.

If we get to December 1st and we have 12 teams, we will roll with what we have unless the league deems that someone else is worthy of being contracted for some grievous offense.

This is my plan, but I would like to do two things before we set that in stone.

1. I would like any feedback or suggestions any of you guys may have.

2. I will finalize this process after the draft. The draft may give us some further insight into how our newbie class may fare here.

For the newbies, you basically need to hit the ground running after the draft. Participate in discussions, be involved in trade activity and do whatever you can to improve your team. If you do that, you stand a decent chance of survival. Like I've said earlier, 2-3 newbies usually survive their first season in this league. We've all been there, and being a vet in this league is a lot of fun.

Draft Randomizer

I will be using the randomizer at www.profantasysports.com

The way it will work is I will enter in all the team names and their corresponding emails. It will run it and email the results to everyone in the league.

I will post the draft order here and on the Yahoo league homepage as well.

kc5ive Intro

I started this league years ago with teamSPB, warNAJERA & a girl named Paula. I built this league from the ground up and turned it into something that will make you laugh one minute and cry the next. This is the new sweet science. I play this game like Shoji Tabuchi plays the fiddle or like your favorite porn star plays the skin flute. If you think I'm your friend, I'll destroy you. If you think I'm your enemy, you'll be able to take advantage of me. Either way you look at it - I'm a cut throat mofo and I'll do what ever it takes to either win - or determine who wins this league.

tataownterror Intro

I am from Wichita and and have played fantasy fro about a dozen years. I am not a wheeler dealer but do like to trade some. The trash talk on message board bothers me because I am a delicate flower. Sorry I have not responded before now I was very buzy at work.

Bucky Intro

I'm a vet, and I believe this is my sixth year, give or take a year. I currently live in Minneapolis, but grew up in Wisconsin. I lived for short time in North Carolina, and I'm the resident UNC fan. I had average showings my first few years in the league.

Three years ago, I led the league most of the year until I had a bad run of injuries at the end, and, quite frankly, a few others outplayed me at the end. The last few years have been disappointing for me, so I'm looking to get back on track.

I think the vets know me as level-headed, and someone they can make deals with. I'm not afraid at all to pull off the blockbuster, but I'm not one to give in easily either.

Just so the newbies find out now, I'm not a huge poster on the message board, and I'm hoping no one calls for my contraction a few months in because I'm perceived as not paying attention to the league. That has happened the past few years, so I hope that doesn't happen again. With that said, I'll try to be more active on the board this year. I'll always throw my two cents when I feel it's worth it, and I'm not afraid to lash out if I feel someone is calling me out unfairly. Even if it's not noticable, I'm always checking in, and I usually respond to offers quickly.

Anyway, I'm ready to get started and am looking forward to another year. By reading the newbies' intros, it sound likes we have a good bunch this year.

warNAJERA Intro

I'm a vet of the league dating back to its roots in 2000. I finished third in the league last year somehow.

My hero is Eduardo Najera of Boomer Sooner fame. He was my hero as soon as he bitched slap Keyon Dooling and sent him to the bench drooling.

I live in a trailer in Lenexa. Hopefully there won't be any internet connection problems. A few years back my wife's pet racoon chewed thru the phone line. My dial up went down and I drafted Brent Barry in the 2nd round. It ruined my entire season.

My arch nemesis is orginal ganster. Although he's about as far from gangster as one can get. I try every year to get along with him, but he always picks fights with me. I HOPE we can CHANGE things this year.

DomYOU Intro

Vet

Started in '03 Never won the league, but I've had very competitive teams at various points of most years.

Best thing about me in this league is I trade quite a bit and engage in trash talk.

My note to everyone, including vets, is to take into account the different methods some people use to trade. Some people will send a crap offer just to get the ball rolling on trade discussions, some will give their best offer the first time around. Figure out who is giving their best offer the first time around and try not to make yourself look stupid by criticizing the offer.

kucb04 Intro

1) Newbie or vet- N00b here

2) If newbie, previous fantasy basketball experience- random forum fantasy leagues, co-owned an espn money league with a buddy last year that we did well in.

3) If vet what year did you begin in this league? -NA

4) What area of the country do you live in?- Currently enrolled at Emporia State University, lived in Lawrence attending KU for 2 years but decided to transfer when I realized journalism was not what I wanted to do and went to the teaching/couching route. I miss Lawrence like hell but luckily am able to attend any football or basketball game I want sense my family has season tickets. I make it to all of the football games and still am able to come up for a handfull of hoops games so it helps cope with the fact that Im here in emporia rather then Larry. Originally from Syracuse Kansas, a tiny town 10 miles from the colorado border in southwest kansas.

5) What is the best thing you think you bring to this league?- Hope I can just bring another competetive manager to the league and someone fun to chat/discuss hoops with.

Dandum Intro

Ok, so I'm a new guy. I have played Fantasy Basketball for about 8 years or so at varying degrees of competitiveness. I tend to be very active with moves and trades, so I think this league is going to be a good fit for me. I am also excited about the fact that this is a league that requires daily participation. It is a new level of interaction for me and I am definitely looking forward to it. Thanks for the invite and good luck to all.

Mario's Legends Intro

1) Newbie or vet - Newbie but only until draft night. I'm going to dominate this league like DA and Mario dominated a blunt.

2) If newbie, previous fantasy basketball experience. I've done three-four fantasy bball leagues in the past.

3) If vet what year did you begin in this league?

4) What area of the country do you live in? I'm from good ole' Kansas City.

5) What is the best thing you think you bring to this league? I love the trash talk aspect. I like going back and forth no issues.

Rough Riders Intro

1) Newbie or vet: Newbie to this league, but been in several others.

2) If newbie, previous fantasy basketball experience. Played in Several Yahoo Leagues and took home the league title in 2003 & 2007

3) If vet what year did you begin in this league? N/A

4) What area of the country do you live in? I live in Overland Park, Work in KCMO

5) What is the best thing you think you bring to this league? My sparkling personality, and I’m a Mizzou guy so I am the token diversifier

KC Bricks Intro

I'm Bricks (Ryan) I survived last year being a newbie.

My advice to the newbies this year is to stay active and things get easier the longer you stay with it. Don't be afraid to trade and pay attention to the contraction process.

I finished fifth last year but it deserves an * My team got bailed out last year early.

I graduated from KU back in 97 and my wife, daughter and I live in OOOOOlathe.

Jake Taylor Intro

I'm Jake Taylor (yes, that's an alias) and I'm a veteran to this insanity. Last year I finished 7th in my first season, but that number's deceiving as I was leading the first 10 weeks or so (until Ash built arguably the greatest fantasy basketball squad ever) and then made two unnecessary trades late and both my players went down with injuries and cost me several spots near the end.

I'm from Central Illinois, was stuck in Cleveland the past two seasons, but have recently moved to Scottsdale. My activity and communication adds a lot to this league, which is why I made it through last season. With working much more this year, that may take a small dip, but it'll be minimal. Best of luck everyone.

Original Gangster Intro

1) vet -- my name is sean (seanj on phog.net).

3) If vet what year did you begin in this league? i started the first year of this particular league -- i think it was 1999 or 2000, but i can't remember well.

4) What area of the country do you live in? i live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

5) What is the best thing you think you bring to this league? honestly, i used to be way, way better than i am now. i have won the league before. i won another league i played in last year and also the year before so there's that, but i've done poorly in this league the last few years. in fact, last year i finished 5th in a year where some weird things happened with the league. in any regard, i tend to be very active on the forums and very active in moves, but i don't pull the trade trigger much. on the other hand, i am on sabbatical until January so i have MUCHO time to do this league through december and then i'll still have time, but not all day long. heh. i am going to try and trade more.

Miracles88 Intro

I'm Miracles88, I'm a vet. I started out in this league in 2003. I was the commish in 2006 as well.

I think the best thing I bring to the league is consistent activity in all aspects and leadership whether as commish or just regular manager.

I usually finish top half of the league but have not broken through and won the whole thing. I live in Lawrence.

Draft Order

I will run the draft order using a draft randomizer. I will do this by Saturday. I want to make sure everyone is here, accounted for and participating first. That way you will know your draft slot at least 24 hours prior to the draft and can prepare accordingly. Also, I will allow the trading of draft slots for the WHOLE DRAFT. That means if you draw the #1 pick and another manager draws #6 and you each prefer the other's slot, you may agree to trade that slot. However, the draft does snake each round and you will be trading slots for the entire draft.

I will not allow the trading of individual draft picks because it could make the draft a fustercluck. There will be plenty of opportunity to trade individual players after the draft. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask.

Conduct on Message Board

I'll go ahead and set this expectation now. There will be a lot of hardcore trash talk on this board. Some of it can get personal at times. I've gone at it myself at various times with various members of the league. But we all remain friends(well, most of us : ))

The two rules I would like followed this year are:

1) Keep language relatively clean on the board. You can preserve the intent of the message, but I don't want things devolving into an f-you fest. Creative insults are welcomed. I will delete messages that violate this code. Many of us have kids and they often get a glimpse of the league.

2) I don't want to see email harrassment of other league members. If you have a beef, air it out here. That doesn't mean you can't send snide responses to crappy trade offers etc. I just don't want a stalking situation going on. If someone is repeatedly violating these 2 rules, will take action. Hopefully I won't have to.

Veteran's Committee

VETERANS COMMITTEE

I will again have a Veteran's Committee for voting on essential league issues. I will seek a vote of the Veteran's Committee when there is an essential league issue where there is a big split and I am undecided about how to rule on the situation. I do not intend this to be a trade review process, as I will retain that right as Commish and I want the entire league's feedback on questionable trades before I make a decision.

The Veteran's Committee will consist of the following for Season 1:

Miracles88
kc5ive
warNAJERA
Bucky
GQ Dudes
Jake Taylor
Original Gangster
DomYOU
KC Bricks

For Season 2, the Veteran's Committee will consist of the above members and any new members that survived season 1. That means the newbies have the chance to earn their stripes during season 1.

Trade Review Process

TRADE REVIEW PROCESS

I want the league to have a fast flow to it. We have tried voting on trades before, but it seems to bog down the league. I also want to be able to approve and process trades very quickly so you can make the next deal you may have in mind.

As a result of that mission, I am going to retain trade approval/veto rights as commish. However, if a trade is questionable, I will wait to approve it and solicit feedback from the league. At that time I will make a ruling on the trade.

The vets that have been in the league when I'm commish can tell you I will be fair. I will take the "temperature" of the league and then make a decision.

They would also tell you not to test me. If someone is repeatedly acting a fool I will not hesitate to bounce them out of the league. I am doing this job on a volunteer basis for the good of the league.

League basics

DRAFT TIME

Changed the draft time to Sunday night at 8pm. This gives us this week to get situated. The season starts next Tuesday night. This will also give us a day to trade before the games get started. Please try to make this time work. However, if Monday night was better for the vast majority of the league, I could change it to that time. The only thing is we would not have time to make any trades before the first games. Generally, if you are a newbie and you miss the draft, odds are you will not remain in the league.

CONTRACTION

This is a league that has contraction. What that means is, if we have a manager that a) just isn't competitive b) seriously disrupts the league c) misses or completely screws up the draft d) is not making trades e) is not participating on the message boards f) is not actively working to make their team better we can and will remove them from the league. As a newbie your goal should be to survive and return as a veteran next season. The first year is tough, no question. Typically about 2 newbies survive from the 8 or so we start with each year. Veterans generally will not be contracted unless they come out and say they can't devote the time to the league or do something way out of line. Feel free to ask any questions. If you are very thin skinned or this process is something you just can't handle, you are better off finding another league. We will start with a max of 16 teams this year. I think it will end up starting with 12-14 though. We will have a somewhat defined process for contraction. However, I am waiting to see what mix we end up with of managers. I will roll that out during this week. For the vets, it will be pretty similar to what we used last year.

STAT CATEGORIES

The stat categories will remain from last year. They are: GP FGM FG% FTA FT% 3PA 3P% PTS OREB REB AST STL BLK Turnovers TWO SEASONS Per the requests of everyone last year, we are going to have 2 seasons this year. This will foster competition throughout the year and eliminate a scenario where half the league is mailing it in during the last 20 games. The first season will run from October 28th to December February 7th. That covers 50 games. The second season will run from January 1st to the end of the year. Each season will run 50 games. I will adjust position games used limits accordingly to 65 (the minimum Yahoo allows.) The 65 game limit is why we are doing 50 game seasons. January will be busy, but we will get more bang for our buck. I will set up the second league in early December and set the scoring to start on January 1st. We will hold a draft either in mid or late December offline in the league chat for the second season. We will determine the date once I have a good idea of everyone's availability with the holidays. If you are contracted from the first season, you are gone for the second season as well. I reserve the right to recruit more newbies if needed for the second season.

CONTRACTION BIDDING

Like last year, bids for contracted players will be done using DRAFT PICK POSITION. This should work really well this year with the two seasons format. During season 2, the draft position for season 2 will be used. I will log the draft and post it in the Commissioner's Note for reference. This means that when a pool of players is available, we will hold two rounds a day of contraction bidding on those players. There will be an early day bidding round (say 8am-3pm) and an evening bidding round (say 3pm-10pm). All times are CST. You get one opportunity to make your round of bids on the players (on the message board) during that time. That means you need to prioritize who you want and and take your best shot. Sniping (bidding near the deadline) is allowed. Verbally harassing habitual snipers is also encouraged : ).

It will look like this.

Here is a sample pool of contracted players:
Kobe Bryant
Andrew Bynum
Danny Granger
Drew Gooden
Michael Beasley
Maurice Williams
Nick Collison
Samuel Dalembert
Wally Sczcerbiak
Juan Carlos Navarro
Mario Chalmers

I would then make my bids, and the list will look like this (Draft position):

Kobe Bryant - Amare Stoudemire (3)
Andrew Bynum - Zydrunas Ilgauskas (32)
Danny Granger - Ron Artest (51)
Drew Gooden - Lamar Odom (78)
Michael Beasley - Yi Jianlian (92)
Maurice Williams - Andrew Bogut (51)
Nick Collison - Darrel Arthur (112)
Samuel Dalembert - Luke Walton (132)
Wally Sczcerbiak
Juan Carlos Navarro
Mario Chalmers

Assuming those were the winning bids, the next round would look like this:
Amare Stoudemire
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Ron Artest
Lamar Odom
Yi Jianlian
Andrew Bogut
Darrel Arthur
Luke Walton

This cycle continues until there are no players left that anyone wants to bid on. Any player that filters through the process without being bid on will be put into the free agent pool.
